Tours at Thirsk Hall

We offer private group tours of Thirsk Hall interiors and gardens by 18th century historian, Dr Helen Metcalfe. Helen is a social and cultural historian of late-Georgian Britain. Her research engages with the history of the home and of the family, domestic material culture and the history of the emotions.

Visitors can book any of our tours on a bespoke basis - or book onto one of our open group tours which we host every quarter.

  • House & Architecture

Behind the Doors of Thirsk Hall

Thirsk Hall is home to the Bell family and has been passed down through twelve generations. The original house was home to a family of Yeomans and cloth merchants during the early eighteenth century, and was extended in the 1770s by master architect John Carr of York to the Hall we see today. Come and discover the history of a Georgian home, its architecture, and its inhabitants. Walk into the past behind the doors of this fascinating eighteenth-century house, and explore the transformation of the Hall’s exterior and interiors across multiple generations. Uncover stories of love and devotion, mischief and mayhem, alongside tales of familial eccentricities and unusual objects.
